We all know that our dogs pant. But can your dog pant too much? If your dog is panting all the time it could be a sign of an underlying medical issue.

Why Causes Dog Panting?

Here are some common reasons why dogs pant.

Heat

Dogs do not sweat like humans do. They do not sweat, instead they cool their body through their mouth and panting. Panting allows your dog to inhale, humidify and then exhale the air. This cools their boy from the inside out. On excessively hot days make sure your dog has plenty of water.

Stimulation

Your dog may pant heavily when he is stimulated or excited. This is normal behavior and not a cause for concern during the moment of excitement.

Being Stressed

Dogs will pant excessively when they are under duress or stress. Are they not engaging with communication? Do they avoid eye contact? Are the yawning or seem disinterested? These are all signs that your dog may be overly stressed. In these situations, try to place your dog in a safe calm environment.

Pain

Pain can cause your dog to pant. An examination by your veterinarian may be appropriate.

Heatstroke

Hot day with extreme temperatures will cause heavy panting in dogs. Heatstroke can occur and can cause death. Dogs that are unresponsive and are panting heavily should be taken in for medical care immediately.

Remember to never leave your dog in a hot car. Even on a mild day the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly even in as little as 10 minutes.

Normal Panting

If your observation is that your dog is panting more than normal or excessively, you should take him to the vet right away.

Panting can be related to the weather conditions. A resting do should never need to pant excessively.

Symptoms

If your dog seems listless with no appetite and is panting heavily this is a sign something is wrong. Let your vet know the systems to assist in making a diagnosis.
